5 Tips to Keep Sterling Silver Jewellery Shiny (& How to Clean it When it Dulls)

Jewellery always looks best when it's polished and shiny but we know daily life takes the shine off over time. So we've brought together our top tips to keep your jewellery looking great.

1. Avoid perfumes, lotions, suncreams and other cosmetics coming into contact with your jewellery. If you are wearing cosmetics, always try to put your jewellery on last to reduce the exposure of chemicals to the jewellery.
2. Avoid wearing in the shower or when swimming
3. Avoid leaving jewellery wet. Always try to dry the jewellery as best you can after washing your hands.
4. Keep jewellery in a closed jewellery box when not wearing it to keep it tangle-free and away from sunlight
5. Invest in a good quality silver polishing cloth. These are specially designed to remove tarnish and restore shine without scratching the metal. We recommend Town Talk's Silver Polishing Cloth. This is what we have used for years for cleaning any jewellery in the workshop and our own personal jewellery (Anti-Tarnish Silver Polishing Cloths | Town Talk Polish).

Don't always believe social media! Some jewellery companies attempt to lead us to believe that any tarnishing or discolouration indicates that the jewellery is not real sterling silver. This is not accurate!
Sterling silver is an alloy composed of 92.5% pure silver and 7.5% other metals, usually copper. The addition of copper makes the silver more durable and suitable for everyday wear. However, this also means that sterling silver is prone to tarnishing when exposed to air, moisture, and certain chemicals.

Sterling silver jewellery is a beautiful addition to any collection, but it requires regular care to keep it looking its best. By following these simple tips, you can preserve the beauty and shine of your sterling silver pieces for many years to come. Remember, a little effort in maintenance goes a long way in ensuring that your jewellery continues to sparkle.
